Chandler Gallery - Mill Valley's Newest Contemporary Art Gallery, Carrying Forward a Beloved Legacy on Throckmorton Avenue
Some spaces carry an energy that precedes the people who inhabit them - a particular quality of light, a sense of history, a magnetic pull that makes you want to slow down and look more carefully at the world. The space at 108 Throckmorton Avenue in Mill Valley has always been one of those places. For years it was home to the beloved and nationally recognized Seager Gray Gallery. And now, as of March 2025, it belongs to Chandler Gallery - a new chapter written with the same reverence for contemporary art and the same deep commitment to the Mill Valley community that made this address a destination in the first place.
A Legacy Space, A New Vision
Chandler Gallery came to be through the forward thinking of Donna Seager and Suzanne Gray. Knowing the magic of their space and the loss the community would feel upon their closing, they sought someone who could carry their vision forward. Committed to keeping the space a place for contemporary arts and the Mill Valley community, Seager and Gray approached Chandler Simpson, a former director of Maya Frodeman Gallery (previously Tayloe Piggott Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming), who was living in the Bay Area.
Upon her first few steps through the threshold of 108 Throckmorton Avenue, Simpson sensed the magnetism of the space. For her, continuing this legacy is both humbling and exciting: an opportunity to uplift local artists while introducing new artistic perspectives to Marin County and the greater Bay Area.
Rooted in Place, Open to the World
Sitting on the edge of Mill Valley's historic town square, Chandler Gallery draws energy from its surroundings - from the quiet pull of Mount Tamalpais and the towering redwoods of Muir Woods a stone's throw away, to the vibrant hum of San Francisco just across the Golden Gate, and from the storied past and continued vitality of the arts in Marin County.
Chandler Gallery's mission is to bring thoughtful, process-driven exhibitions and conversations to the Bay Area, connecting emerging and celebrated artists with the Mill Valley community and beyond. Mill Valley is a place shaped by both nature and culture, and the gallery pursues engaged programming that reflects the pluralism of its place and space - presenting artists across disciplines, uniting celebrated figures and emerging voices to share diverse perspectives.
The Exhibitions - Thoughtful, Layered, and Deeply Considered
From its first exhibition, Chandler Gallery has shown clear curatorial rigor. The inaugural show, Position / Disposition, presented works by California-based artists centered on place through subject, medium, and process - from melting ice studies in Los Angeles to Northern California landscape and color studies, plus mobiles by East Bay artist Emily Payne casting moving shadows across the gallery walls.
Subsequent exhibitions have continued in that vein. Shows such as Golden Thread use the myth of a guiding thread as a metaphor for hidden unity across an artist's body of work, while Vestige pairs abstract and figurative works through shared explorations of memory and the ephemeral.
Chandler Gallery has also committed to donating 10% of all sales from select exhibitions to partner organizations such as Problem Library, a San Francisco nonprofit supporting emerging artists and community leaders.
A Roster of Artists Worth Knowing
Chandler Gallery's roster includes Mari Andrews, Gale Antokal, Shannon Belardi, Renee Bott, Squeak Carnwath, Catherine Ko Chen, Carolina Cortella, Kristen Garneau, Nick Gorham, Lachlan Hinwood, Cheryl Humphreys, Ruth Charlotte Kneass, Hanneke Lourens, Amy MacKay, Jessica Niello-White, Emily Payne, Mike Piggott, Libby Raab, Mark Tennent, and others - a mix of Bay Area stalwarts, national figures, and international voices that reflects the gallery's ambition to be a regional programming peer.
