About ICB Art
ICB Art in Sausalito, CA
The ICB is sometimes called the Tribeca of Sausalito. That line is about the mix, not the tourist pier. You get industrial rooms, long halls, and people actually making work, not a storefront row of framed prints.
What ICB Art Is
ICB Art is a studio building first. Painters, sculptors, fabric artists, photographers, multimedia producers, and sound studios share the same historic warehouse. The ICB Artists Association opens those studios to the public several times a year and also runs workshops, classes, and other artist services.
History And Setting
Marinship was a World War II shipyard. After the yard closed, the ICB's large, flexible industrial rooms became studio space. The building sits toward the north end of Sausalito, close to the water and the houseboat neighborhood, not on Bridgeway with the ferry crowd. Heath Ceramics is next door at 400 Gate 5 Road. The two stops make a natural Marinship pair.
What's On The Calendar
The signature public days are Open Studios and Artists at Work. Open Studios is the big annual weekend, commonly a Friday evening preview plus Saturday and Sunday daytime hours, with nearly 100 studios open. A recent cycle listed Friday, November 13 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday, November 14 and 15 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Artists at Work is a shorter peek, commonly one Saturday with live demos, recently listed September 26 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Confirm dates before you drive. The association also posts individual exhibits, workshops, and retreats in its newsletter. Admission to the public studio days is commonly free. Parking is free.
Hours, Access, And Parking
There is no everyday retail open sign. Public hours are the event calendar. Between events, schedule a visit with an artist. The building has easy access, free parking, handicap parking, and an elevator.
Approach Marinship from Harbor Drive if Gate 5 Road is in poor shape, the same advice Heath gives for the block. Do not assume Bridgeway GPS will drop you at the courtyard.
What The Visit Is Like
On Open Studios weekend the halls fill with color, conversation, and people moving studio to studio. Artists at Work is quieter and closer to watching someone mid-process. An appointment visit is a one-studio conversation. Wear comfortable shoes. Give yourself time. This is a warehouse, not a single gallery room.
Why People Go
People come to meet working artists in their rooms, to buy work without a downtown markup, and to see a Sausalito that is still a shipyard-turned-studio. They stay because the ICB is one of the largest working art buildings in Marin, and because Open Studios is a real county event, not a pop-up.
Who ICB Art Is Best For
ICB Art works especially well for collectors who want to talk to the maker, visitors pairing Heath Ceramics with something less retail, students looking for workshops, and anyone who will wait for the next public day. It is less ideal if you need a gallery you can walk into any Tuesday afternoon.
Where It Fits In Your Sausalito Day
A simple Marinship loop is Heath Ceramics in the morning, ICB Art on an Open Studios or appointment afternoon, then lunch on Bridgeway at Bar Bocce or downtown at Sushi Ran. Equator covers coffee if you came off the ferry first. Save ICB for a day when studios are actually open.
