About Makers Market
Makers Market - Mill Valley's Premier Destination for American Handcrafted Goods and Local Artisan Fairs
In a world increasingly flooded with mass-produced everything, there is something deeply satisfying about holding an object and knowing exactly who made it, how it was made, and why. That is the feeling Makers Market has been cultivating since 2014 - and at their home in the stunning Mill Valley Lumber Yard, it has become one of the most beloved shopping and community experiences in all of Marin County.
Rebuilding the legacy of American Made, one story at a time is the mission at the heart of Makers Market. It is not just a tagline. It is a genuine curatorial philosophy that shapes every product on the shelf, every vendor at the fair, and every experience inside the store.
The Story Behind the Market
Makers Market founder Suzy Ekman grew up in the Deep South, spending precious time alongside her father in his workshop - learning, making, and listening to stories. They traveled regularly through the countryside discovering potters, blacksmiths, textile weavers, and furniture makers. Watching these artisans create their products and hearing about their lives and craft instilled a deep appreciation for those who design and make beautiful things with their hands. That spirit lives on in every corner of the Mill Valley location - the feeling that you are one-on-one with a master craftsman in their workshop, hearing their tales as they create.
The Brick and Mortar Store - Curated American Craftsmanship Year-Round
In their quest to bring the best in American handcrafted goods, Makers Market has vetted each product to ensure it is well-designed, long-lasting, and either organic, sustainable, or ethically produced - honoring the ideals of American craftsmanship while remaining modern and heritage-inspired. The permanent shop at Suite 603 in the Mill Valley Lumber Yard carries handcrafted goods including jewelry, handbags, ceramics, glassware, soaps, candles, home goods, apparel, leather goods, and more - all from makers whose stories are as compelling as their products. It is the kind of store where you come in for one thing and leave with three, because every item on display earns its place.
The Monthly Local Artist Fairs - A Mill Valley Tradition
Beyond the permanent shop, Makers Market hosts monthly outdoor Local Artist Fairs at the Mill Valley Lumber Yard that have become a beloved fixture of the Marin County community calendar. Each fair brings together approximately 15 local makers offering handmade jewelry, pottery, fragrances, candles, bath and body products, apparel, leather goods, and more - all in a kid- and pet-friendly outdoor setting with live music. The fairs run from 11 AM to 5 PM and take place monthly from spring through fall, drawing locals and visitors alike to the gorgeous Lumber Yard setting with its majestic views of Mt. Tamalpais and redwood-lined surroundings.
While you are at the fair, great food and drinks are available right on-site at Watershed Restaurant, Eddy Bar and Bottle, Flour Craft Bakery, and Millie's Crepe et Creme - making the whole afternoon a true Mill Valley outing rather than just a shopping trip.
A Community Mission That Goes Beyond Retail
Makers Market aims to bring products that honor the ideals of American craftsmanship while joining the mission of rebuilding the legacy of American Made and supporting local artists and the community. Shopping here is not just a transaction - it is an act of support for real people, real craft, and a way of making things that is increasingly rare and genuinely worth preserving. Every purchase tells a story, and every maker behind it is someone whose livelihood depends on people like you choosing handmade over mass-produced.
There is an exciting resurgence in American making right now - steeped in tradition and relevant to the modern world - and Makers Market is right at the center of it, weaving that legacy back together, one story at a time.
