About Sol Food
Sol Food - Authentic Puerto Rican Cuisine in the Heart of Marin
Some restaurants feed you. Sol Food transports you. What SOL FOOD began in 2003 as a four-person operation at the San Rafael 4th Street Farmers' Market has grown into one of Marin County's most beloved culinary institutions - a place where the flavors of the Caribbean have found a permanent, joyful home in Northern California.
Founded by Marisol Hernandez, who drew from her Puerto Rican heritage to bring traditional flavors to a new audience, Sol Food was built on the idea that food should feel like home. That spirit has never left. Whether you're a first-timer or a regular who's lost count of your visits, walking through the door of that iconic green building on Lincoln Avenue feels like an occasion.
The Food
The menu is a celebration of comida criolla - the soulful, bold, and deeply satisfying cooking of Puerto Rico. Sol Food is known for its incredibly fresh ingredients, unique flavor combinations, and its legendary homemade sauces, including a Pique hot sauce and a Lemon Garlic dressing that locals have been known to order by the bottle. Standouts include the bistec encebollado (thinly sliced steak with sauteed onions), the pollo marinated in oregano and garlic, and the mofongo - fried green plantain mashed with fresh garlic and olive oil that is as close to perfection as a side dish gets. Don't leave without trying the tostones. You'll be thinking about them on the drive home.
The Locations
Sol Food now operates three locations: The Green Building and La Bodega (the dedicated pick-up spot next door), both on Lincoln Avenue in San Rafael, and a Mill Valley location on Miller Avenue. Dine-in, takeout, and catering are all available, and Sol Food has become a go-to for everything from casual weeknight dinners to office catering and private gatherings.

Pro Tip: If it's your first time, order the pollo with tostones and ask for extra lemon-garlic dressing and pique on the side - then grab a bottle to take home if they're available.
