- Hike to West Point Inn for Pancakes: A Mount Tam Morning
A breakfast worth building a morning around
For locals, this is a reason to return to the mountain with friends. For visitors, it is a satisfying way to make a hike the main event rather than squeeze one between stops.
The walk is part of the plan
West Point Inn is a historic mountain inn reached on foot or by bicycle by ordinary visitors. Its pancake fundraisers bring people together around a shared destination. Think trail shoes and time outside, rather than a restaurant reservation with parking at the door.
Keep the rest of the day loose. A leisurely return is more enjoyable than watching the clock because you booked another activity immediately afterward. If your group has mixed hiking experience, choose the route for the least comfortable walker.
Tickets first, trail plan second
For 2026, advance meal tickets and arrival within the booked window were required; service ran from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Prices and future dates should come from the next official booking page, not an old listing. Read the event details before booking.
Save your confirmation before leaving home, then work backward from your arrival window. Include the drive, parking, the walk, and a little breathing room. Treat the hiking estimate as moving time, not a promise that you can park and be eating within the hour.
Choose your approach
Use the innβs official hiking directions alongside a downloaded trail map. These are route choices, not a substitute for navigation at junctions.
Pantoll: the straightforward first-visit choice
The inn describes the Old Stage Road approach from Pantoll as its easiest, most level option: 1.9 miles each way, roughly 3.8 miles out and back. Its estimate is about 45 minutes one way. For a relaxed group, we suggest allowing 60β90 minutes each way, plus breakfast time.
The route starts across Panoramic Highway from the ranger station; take care crossing. A paved beginning gives way to dirt road. βEasiestβ is relative: you still need to handle an outdoor walk of nearly four miles, with the return ahead of you after breakfast.
Other starts: pick a hike, not just a parking space
- Mountain Home Inn: The inn estimates about an hour on foot. A good alternative when you want a different mountain approach.
- Mill Valley: Around two hours up according to the inn, making breakfast part of a longer hiking day.
- Bootjack: The inn warns that this approach can be steep and strenuous. Do not choose it merely because it appears short on a map.
Check the full directions for your chosen trailhead and use the same route back if you want the simplest plan. Do not improvise a bigger loop just to meet a ticket window.
Leave room for the mountain

The details that make the day easier
Parking and access
The innβs getting-here page lists paid day parking at Pantoll, Bootjack, and East Peak at $8, cash or check. Verify the posted fee and payment instructions when you arrive. Legal free day parking is also listed across from Mountain Home Inn and near the Mountain Theater; spaces are not guaranteed.
Navigate to your chosen trailhead, not the innβs street address. General visitors cannot drive to the door. Accessibility-related vehicle access requires advance arrangements with the innkeeper; read the accessibility information before deciding whether the outing fits your needs.
Kids, dogs, and dietary needs
For families, try a walk of comparable length before making breakfast the reward. Give kids a snack beforehand, allow breaks, and carry something for the return. Hungry hikers and a fixed arrival window are an avoidable combination.
The event FAQ says pets cannot enter the buildings or porches, although dogs are welcome at surrounding picnic tables. That does not establish dog access on every approach trail: check your entire routeβs rules before bringing one.
The 2026 FAQ explicitly says gluten-free and vegan pancakes are unavailable; it lists a gluten-free oatmeal meal instead. Ask the organizer directly about your dietary needs. Check the current event FAQ.
Pack for a hike, even when the goal is breakfast
- Water for the whole outing, a snack, and any personal essentials.
- A warm layer, sun protection, and footwear with dependable traction.
- An offline map, saved ticket details, and the trailhead location.
- A small bag for carrying out your rubbish.
Check the mountain forecast and closures before departure. Fog can change the view; a windy stop can feel different from walking uphill. The innβs policies say it closes on Mount Tam Red Flag Alerts and on Mondays. If conditions or your groupβs energy do not fit the outing, choose another day.

No. Pancakes are served at special fundraising breakfasts, not as a regular weekend restaurant service. Check the official event page before planning a breakfast hike.
Do you need tickets for the pancake breakfast?
Advance meal tickets were required for the 2026 season, with arrival in your selected time slot. Check the next announced event for availability, price, and booking terms.
How long is the hike from Pantoll?
The inn lists the Old Stage Road approach as 1.9 miles each way, or about 3.8 miles out and back. Its estimate is around 45 minutes each way; allow more time for your group, stops, and conditions.
Can you drive to West Point Inn for breakfast?
Ordinary breakfast visitors hike or bike in. If you need an accessibility accommodation, contact the inn in advance rather than attempting to drive a gated fire road.
